It is easy to believe that vulnerability only affects “other people”, a minority or an exceptional situation. The reality is very different.
In Belgium, many children grow up in fragile circumstances: family difficulties, neglect, abuse, social isolation, disability or financial hardship. These situations are not always visible. They do not show on a child’s face and are often lived in silence.
A vulnerable child is not only a child in immediate danger. Sometimes it is a child who is not listened to, who has no safe space and who feels neither protected nor supported. In the long term, this fragility can weigh on their confidence and on their ability to learn, to fit in and to look ahead.
Vulnerability is not an individual weakness. It is a collective responsibility.
Ignoring these realities means accepting that some of our young people go through life with an invisible handicap. Taking them into account means recognising that every child deserves to grow up in an environment where they can smile, be protected and be supported.
Taking action does not necessarily mean making a lot of noise. Sometimes it is enough to reach out, to create a safe environment or to support those already working on the ground. Above all, it means refusing to look away.
